In the heart of Sussex lies the Millennium Seed Bank, a treasure trove of scientific excellence.

Rare and threatened seeds from around the globe are stored in our radiation-proof, bomb-proof and flood-proof vaults, whilst our scientists study their viability and germination traits.

With two out of every five plant species threatened with extinction, seed banks are now more crucial than ever in providing a backup of threatened plants.

If the need arises, this invaluable conservation resource can help re-establish at-risk plant populations in their native habitat so they are preserved for generations to come.

Did you know? We’ve now stored over 40,000 plant species! Recent additions include the critically endangered Perrier’s baobab and a number of orchid species from the Caucasus region.
