Join us for summer holiday fun. Go on an adventure through our wild botanic garden with an explorer rucksack. Get set for a herbal academy, pond dipping, photography workshops, and tree climbing. 

Burn off steam in our natural play areas throughout the grounds. Crawl, explore and get to know Wakehurst’s trees at Tree Trunk Trek in Coates Wood

Workshops and activities 

Explorer rucksacks

Location: Pick up your rucksack at the Visitor Centre

Price: £4 

Pull-on one of our new Summer Explorer rucksacks and prepare for an intrepid journey through Wakehurst.

We have three packs for your adventure:

  • Nature explorers (under 6's): Get creative and unleash your inner explorer with these artistic, nature-spotting challenges
  • Discovery explorer (6 – 8's): Get up-close to the world's mini-beasts
  • Expedition explorer (8+):  Take our seasonal challenge with a summer checklist of nature to spot in the gardens.

Herbal academy 

Date: Mondays 29 July – 30 August

Ages: Suitable for 4 – 14 years

Time: Drop in sessions (no need to book), 10am – 5pm (last one 4.30pm)

Location: Lambing sheds (just past the Millennium Seed Bank)

Price: £4

Examine herbs under the microscope, learn how to identify them, and then grind them using a pestle and mortar to release their amazing scents.

You'll be shown how to hammer herbs to release pigments, blend herbs together to make tea bags, and create your own herbal bath bomb. 

Pond dipping

Date: Fridays 29 July – 30 August

Ages: Suitable for 4 – 14 years

Location: The Wetlands

Time: Drop in sessions 11am – 5pm (sessions start on the hour, last session 4pm) 

Cost: £4

Become a water detective and discover the fascinating creatures that live in the Wetlands. 

See what you can catch in the wetlands and then learn how to identify what you've caught using magnifiers and bug pots. Examine your specimens using microscopes, and take home a record of what you've found.

Photography workshops

Date and time:10.30am – 3.30pm 20 August (7 – 11yrs), 21 August (12 – 15yrs)

Location: Wakehurst (meet at the Visitor Centre)

Price: £50 (7 – 11yrs), £60 (12 – 15yrs)

Optional camera hire: £5 (7 – 11yrs), £10 (12 – 15yrs)

Learn how to take great photographs of Wakehurst’s nature and wildlife.  The workshop will cover how the camera works, how to use camera settings creatively, how to use shutter speed and aperture, and how to take stunning close ups of plants and flowers. 

Each child will come away with a great portfolio of images, and will bring home a couple prints of their favourite photographs too.

Tree climbing

Thrill seekers will love stepping out of their comfort zone and learning to climb a tree supported by ropes and carabiners. Qualified instructors will be on hand to support your climb. 

Dates: 26 and 27 August

Price: Tree climbing £10 for 30 minutes.
