KS2 A place to grow
Pupils use a variety of field study techniques to demonstrate the effect of environmental factors on plant growth in two different habitats at Wakehurst.
Level
Key Stage 2
Duration
90 minutes
Allocated space
30 pupils per group
Recommended dates
March to October
Pupils compare an area of dark dense woodland and a meadow and investigate how these contrasting sites affect the plants that grow there.
Pupils have the opportunity to use scientific equipment to help in their investigation.
Learning outcomes
We design our sessions to match the learning outcomes in the national curriculum. All our sessions have a cross-curricular approach and are tailored to suit the educational needs of your group.
We aim to give pupils opportunities to work scientifically in areas that are difficult or impossible to create in the school environment.
This session offers pupils the opportunity to:
- Use a range of field equipment.
- Take soil samples.
- Make systematic and careful observations of environmental factors.
- Take accurate measurements of the environmental factors.
- Compare plant ground cover.
- Identify the reasons for differences.
- Record findings.
Curriculum links
This KS2 visit supports and enhances the Science curriculum offered in schools.
Lower KS2
Year 3 - Plants
- Explore the requirements of plants for life and growth and how they vary from plant to plant.
Year 4
- Recognise that living things can be grouped in a variety of ways.
- Explore and use classification keys to help group, identify and name a variety of living things in their local and wider environment.
- Recognise that environments can change and that this can sometimes pose dangers to living things.
Upper KS2
Year 6
- Identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution.
