Level

Key Stage 2

Duration

90 minutes

Allocated space

30 pupils per group

Pupils work in small groups using a variety of fieldwork equipment to study different species of tree.

They compare their findings and draw simple conclusions about the differences between trees. The information collected can be used back at school to build a key from the collected data.

Learning outcomes

We design our sessions to match the learning outcomes in the national curriculum. All our sessions have a cross-curricular approach and are tailored to suit the educational needs of your group. We aim to give pupils opportunities to work scientifically in areas that are difficult or impossible to create in the school environment.

This session offers pupils the opportunity to:

  • Make systematic and careful observations of the chosen tree.
  • Take accurate measurements e.g. height, girth and canopy cover.
  • Gather and record data.
  • Identify tree species.
