March to October

Using living plants grown in our nursery pupils observe the life cycle of a sunflower - from seed to flower.

Pupils compare and contrast dry and soaked seeds, take seedlings out of the soil, and look carefully at the root structure. They are able to observe how the plant changes as it grow to its full height and compare it to their own growth.

Learning outcomes

We design our sessions to match the learning outcomes in the national curriculum. All our sessions have a cross-curricular approach and are tailored to suit the educational needs of your group. We aim to give pupils opportunities to work scientifically in areas that are difficult or impossible to create in the school environment.

This session offers pupils the opportunity to:

  • Sequence the plants to show the sunflower lifecycle.
  • Observe closely the changes which occur as the plants grow.
  • Identify the basic structure of the plant.
  • Compare the different stages of the plant.
  • Understand the different parts of the plant and their functions.
