Taxonomy, systematics and floristic research on South-East Asia plant biodiversity, especially New Guinea

I head the Identification and Naming Department, which comprises four Teams (Africa & Madagascar, Americas, Asia and Mycology). Each undertakes fundamental taxonomic research and inventories, whilst maintaining and enhancing the collections. As Head of Identification and Naming, I contribute to all aspects of the Department’s science direction and am a member of Kew’s Senior Science Group.

I am the leader of the Asia Team in the Identification and Naming Department, which undertakes taxonomic and floristic research throughout the region, with a focus on SE Asia. In addition to research outputs, the team curates, maintains and enhances a significant portion of the Herbarium including naming several thousand incoming specimens each year.

My own research is focused on the floristics of New Guinea, the taxonomy and systematics of tropical Primulaceae, and conveying taxonomy and plant identification to a broad audience of stakeholders both inside and outside botany.
