Specialism

Seed Conservation, seed x-ray analysis, seed banking, germination testing

As a member of the seed collections section at Kew's Millennium Seed Bank I undertake the processing of seed collections for long-term storage and conservation. Work undertaken includes the initial receipt and assessment of incoming seed bank collections, followed by the cleaning, x-raying, counting, banking and germination testing of the collections. I assist in the training of visitors, new staff and the supervision of volunteers. As a member of the herbarium team I carry out the monitoring and collection of cultivated plant voucher material from the glasshouses which is pressed, dried and sent to Kew for verification and mounting. I am also involved in the regeneration and harvesting of relevant collections where necessary. I also participate in seed collecting both in the UK and overseas when required.
