Honorary Research Associate
Since August 2015 I have been an Honorary Research Associate with Kew’s Identification and Naming Department. Before that (2014 – 2015) I was a Conservation Partnership Co-ordinator in the Seed Conservation Section of the Conservation Science Department, and earlier (1995 – 2014) a Seed Collector / International Co-ordinator with the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership.
Before I came to Kew I worked as a Genetic Resources Scientist / Plant Taxonomist (1988 – 1994) at the Genetic Resources Unit of the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas based near Aleppo, Syria; its seed bank contributes to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.
A taxonomist by training my research currently deals with a monographic study of the wheat genus, Triticum L. This will be the first such attempt in the English language since Percival's 1921 effort and the first time that all published names since the start of taxonomy and nomenclature (with the publication of Linnaeus’s Species Plantarum in 1753) will be considered. After completion I plan similar monographic work on other major cereals such as maize and rice. I am also available to provide taxonomic and nomenclatural assistance for colleagues and, until recently, served for a total of 21 years on the Editorial Board of Kew Bulletin.
