My PhD with RBG Kew and Royal Holloway University of London is focused on investigating the effects species richness on the expression of leaf defences in trees.
I am conducting fieldwork using biodiversity experiments in the TreeDivNet network, including the Climate Match Experiment in the UK and the Satakunta Experiment in Finland. Using LC-MS and other analytical methods, I am comparing the chemical profiles of the leaves of trees growing in monocultures to those in species mixtures and relating this to additional factors such as effects of shading and herbivory.
I am also involved in a project looking at the terepenoids and flavonoids in the genus Scutellaria, which includes several species with medicinal properties.
