School visits to Wakehurst

Wakehurst provides a perfect setting for an outdoor classroom. The exceptional plant collections, glorious grounds and vital scientific research provide a context for all stages and types of learning.

The perfect classroom

Kew’s botanic garden in Sussex is the perfect classroom for the day. Teachers and pupils will benefit from:

  • 500 acres that include botanic gardens, temperate woodlands, wetlands and meadows
  • Natural play spaces
  • An Elizabethan mansion
  • The Millennium Seed Bank – one of the world’s largest seed preservation projects

Teachers can choose from:

  • Assisted visit – with educational sessions by a Kew teacher
  • Self-led visit - where teachers lead their children's class

Assisted visit (with education sessions)

Our experienced teachers and volunteers will ensure your students have a stimulating and enjoyable time. We focus on promoting understanding of plant biology and the environment for all levels and age groups. Our approach is cross-curricular in order to give the very best out-of-classroom experience.

Each session in the assisted visit programme has a capacity of 20-30 students. Wakehurst can accommodate groups of up to 120 students by implementing a rotating timetable.

We pride ourselves in well organised, fun, stress-free days that allow teachers to participate fully with their students.

Teacher reviews

'I rank this visit as one of the best learning experiences I've ever had in 30 years of teaching.'
Primary teacher, Broadfield East school

'We all had a wonderful day and appreciate the amount of effort and planning that resulted in this being such a memorable and worthwhile experience for all our students. We have heard many appreciative quotes from the students about our visit, such as “The best day ever!” and “I’ve loved every minute”, so a big “Thank you” from all of us to all the staff who made our day such a success.'
Teacher, Broomhill Bank
