How to: Create with Kew

Take your pick from a range of new online courses from Kew, from botanical illustration to making your own terrarium.

By Ellen Reid

Temperate House

Kew has partnered with David and Charles, an independent publishing company with over 60 years’ experience in providing clear, easy-to-follow instructions, to bring you course content accessible from home – wherever in the world that may be.

Here you can find a round-up of our latest online courses, from blending essential oils to growing your own food.

What to expect

The courses are offered as online videos, so you can follow at your own pace. There are PDF resources to use online or print, and quizzes to test your knowledge.

The social part of taking a workshop isn’t missing either, as starting a course gives you access to private student groups where you can ask questions and share ideas with fellow learners.

All instructors are approved by Kew and provide the quality and expertise of an in-person course in your own home. Plus, all course materials remain available to you for 12 months after attending a course.

Growing herbs and veg in pots

Perfect for those who want to grow their own food but have little space to spare, follow Mark Ridsdill-Smith's instructions and you’ll soon have an abundance of leafy plants and herbs to enjoy at home.

The superior flavour and freshness of homegrown food may soon have you hooked. Included in the course materials is the instructor’s book with details of how to make use of vertical space to increase your harvest.

Botanical painting

It is a popular assumption that botanical illustration is all about fine petals and leaves, but it can also highlight the wonders of vegetables. This course focuses on the succulent sweet pepper.

Botanical illustration has deep historic roots and is a means to preserve and study plant species. In this Introduction to Botanical Painting course, you will learn the whole process: from preparing your specimen to painting techniques that best capture the contours and colours of your subject.
