Story of Flowers was inspired by Azuma Makoto’s desire to teach his daughter about the life cycle of plants. The film shows how different flowers are pollinated, take root, grow, and decay through the seasons.

Azuma Makoto was a flower seller in one of Tokyo’s busiest markets, which inspired him to become a flower artist and botanical sculptor. He created Iced Flowers (2015), an exhibition of flower bouquets frozen into blocks of ice. Another exhibition featured bonsai trees that were carried into the stratosphere. Story of Flowers is an enchanting short film which will inspire people of all ages. The animation is a collaboration between Azuma, botanical illustrator Katie Scott, and animator James Paulley.

The film is being shown in the Princess of Wales Conservatory, which contains ten computer-controlled climates. An ideal venue for Makoto’s exploration of the plant kingdom.
