KS5 Biology: Conservation and biodiversity

What is biodiversity and how does human activity affect it?

Map showing the global reach of Kew's scientific work

Level

Key Stage 5

Duration

90 minutes

Allocated space

15 pupils per group

Overview

What is biodiversity and how does human activity affect it? Discover our conservation work globally and nationally and analyse the balance between conservation and the human need for natural resources.

What makes a successful reintroduction programme? Can we use natural resources in a sustainable way?

Pupils will place themselves in the role of Kew scientists and use their research and inquiry skills to present scientific arguments and make decisions based on their findings.

Please note, elements of this session will be delivered outside, in one of our classrooms, and in a glasshouse.

Learning outcomes

Pupils will be able to:

  • Describe and understand the work of Kew scientists in breeding and reintroducing endangered species using in-situ and ex-situ conservation methods.
  • Understand the ways in which human activity can impact biodiversity and explain some measures to manage this.
  • Give examples of how environmental resources can be managed in a sustainable way.
  • Explain the role of the Millennium Seed Bank in plant conservation.

We will ensure learning outcomes are relevant to your pupils and will focus on your chosen exam board.
