KS2 Maths in the great outdoors

Allow pupils to develop confidence and mental fluency in number, measurement, shape and space in the natural environment.

Student on a 'maths in the great outdoors' session

Level

Key Stage 2

Duration

90 minutes

Allocated space

15 pupils per group

Overview

Pupils use the spectacular and stimulating grounds of Kew to solve mathematical problems, undertake practical hands-on activities, recording observations, collecting and presenting data.

This session will be delivered outside in the Gardens.

Learning outcomes

Pupils will be able to:

  • Design and carry out simple experiments using estimation, measuring and geometry.
  • Use observations, sampling and calculation skills in the field.
  • Use mathematical knowledge and teamwork to find solutions to challenges.

We will ensure the learning outcomes focus on the year group taking part.

Keywords:

Maths

Lower KS2

  • Measure the perimeter of simple 2-D shapes.
  • Identify lines of symmetry in 2-D shapes presented in different orientation.
  • Interpret and present data using bar charts, pictograms and tables.
  • Identify right angles.
  • Connect estimation and rounding numbers to the use of measuring instruments.

Upper KS2

  • Solve problems involving measure.
  • Recognise the per cent symbol (%) and understand that per cent relates to ‘number of parts per hundred'.
  • Calculate and compare the area of rectangles (including squares), recognise and use square numbers.
  • Know angles are measured in degrees.
  • Illustrate and name parts of circles, including radius, diameter and circumference.

Science

Working scientifically

  • Setting up simple practical enquiries, comparative and fair tests.
  • Making systematic and careful observations and, where appropriate, taking accurate measurements using standard units.
  • Planning different types of scientific enquiries to answer questions.
  • Reporting and presenting findings from enquiries including conclusions.
  • Identifying evidence that has been used to support or refute ideas or arguments.
