Dendrocalamus cauhaiensis

HABIT Perennial; caespitose. Rhizomes short; pachymorph. Culms erect; erect at the tip, or nodding at the tip; 1800–2000 cm long; 100–170 mm diam.; woody; with aerial roots from the nodes. Culm-internodes terete; hollow; 42–57 cm long; distally pruinose. Culm-nodes with distinct supra-nodal ridge. Lateral branches dendroid; arising from upper culm. Bud complement 1. Branch complement several; with 1 branch dominant. Culm-sheaths deciduous; coriaceous; hispid; with appressed hairs; with black hairs; hairy on margins; convex at apex; auriculate; with 5–6 mm high auricles; with 1–2 mm wide auricles; setose on shoulders; shoulders with 2.5–3 mm long hairs. Culm-sheath ligule 9–11 mm high; fimbriate. Culm-sheath blade lanceolate; reflexed; hispid; acuminate. Leaves (5–)7–9 per branch. Leaf-sheaths hispid; hairs yellow. Leaf-sheath auricles absent. Ligule an eciliate membrane; 3 mm long; truncate. Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath; petiole 0.9–1.1 cm long. Leaf-blades lanceolate, or oblong; 25–33(–50) cm long; 45–67(–120) mm wide. Leaf-blade venation with 26–36 secondary veins. Leaf-blade surface scabrous; rough abaxially. Leaf-blade apex acute.

INFLORESCENCE Synflorescence bractiferous; clustered at the nodes; in untidy tufts (of 1–3 spikelets); with glumaceous subtending bracts; with axillary buds at base of spikelet; prophyllate below lateral spikelets; with 1-keeled prophylls; leafless between clusters.

Fertile spikelets sessile.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 6–7 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate, or ovate; laterally compressed; 15–17 mm long; 6–8 mm wide; falling entire. Rhachilla internodes suppressed between florets.

GLUMES Glumes two; 1–2 empty glumes; similar; shorter than spikelet. Lower glume lanceolate; chartaceous; without keels. Lower glume apex acute; mucronate. Upper glume ovate; 4–6 mm long; chartaceous; without keels. Upper glume surface puberulous. Upper glume margins ciliate. Upper glume apex obtuse, or acute.

FLORETS Fertile florets increasing in size upwards. Fertile lemma ovate; 12–15 mm long; 8–12 mm wide; chartaceous; without keel. Lemma surface puberulous. Lemma margins ciliolate. Lemma apex acute, or apiculate. Palea lanceolate, or oblong; 8–12 mm long; chartaceous; 8–9 -veined; 2-keeled but the uppermost without keels. Palea keels ciliolate. Palea surface pubescent; hairy on back, or on margins.

FLOWER Lodicules absent, or 1. Anthers 6; 5–5.5 mm long; yellow; anther tip penicillate. Stigmas 1; pubescent. Ovary pubescent on apex.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp.

DISTRIBUTION Asia-tropical: Indo-China.
