Poa xingkaiensis

HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes elongated. Culms erect; 40–50 cm long; 1–2 mm diam.; 3–4 -noded. Culm-internodes smooth. Lateral branches lacking. Leaf-sheaths longer than adjacent culm internode; smooth. Ligule an eciliate membrane; 2.5–3 mm long; pubescent on abaxial surface; truncate. Leaf-blades flat; 5–20 cm long; 2–3 mm wide. Leaf-blade apex hooded.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle open; pyramidal; 10–15 cm long; 2–3 cm wide. Primary panicle branches ascending; 5 -nate; 1–3 cm long; bearing 6–9 fertile spikelets on each lower branch. Panicle axis with lower internodes 1–2 cm long. Panicle branches capillary; scabrous.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 2 fertile florets; with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets lanceolate; laterally compressed; 3.5–4 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Floret callus woolly.

GLUMES Glumes persistent; similar; shorter than spikelet. Lower glume lanceolate; 3.8–4 mm long; 0.9 length of upper glume; membranous; 1-keeled; 3 -veined. Lower glume primary vein scabrous. Lower glume apex acuminate. Upper glume lanceolate; 4.1–4.5 mm long; 1.3 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous; 1-keeled; 3 -veined. Upper glume primary vein scabrous. Upper glume apex acute.

FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate; 3–3.3 mm long; membranous; keeled; 5 -veined. Lemma midvein ciliolate; hairy above. Lemma surface glabrous. Lemma apex acute. Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped.
