Fargesia schmidiana

HABIT Perennial; caespitose. Rhizomes short; pachymorph. Culms 150–200 cm long; woody. Culm-internodes terete. Lateral branches dendroid. Leaf-sheaths reticulately veined; glabrous on surface. Ligule absent. Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath; petiole 0.2–0.4 cm long; petiole glabrous. Leaf-blades deciduous at the ligule; lanceolate; 6.5–9.5 cm long; 5–9 mm wide. Leaf-blade venation with 6–10 secondary veins; with distinct cross veins. Leaf-blade surface puberulous; hairy abaxially. Leaf-blade margins scaberulous. Leaf-blade apex attenuate.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle open; 8–10 cm long.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels 5–25 mm long; glabrous.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 4–5 fertile florets; with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets lanceolate; laterally compressed; 12–14 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret.

GLUMES Glumes two, or several; 2–3 empty glumes; persistent; similar; shorter than spikelet; similar to fertile lemma in texture. Lower glume lanceolate; 3 mm long; herbaceous; without keels; 3 -veined. Lower glume apex attenuate. Upper glume ovate; 9–10 mm long; herbaceous; without keels; 7 -veined. Upper glume surface puberulous; hairy above. Upper glume apex setaceously attenuate.

FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate; 9–10 mm long; herbaceous; without keel; 9 -veined. Lemma surface puberulous; hairy above. Lemma margins ciliate. Lemma apex acuminate; mucronate. Palea 7–8 mm long. Palea keels ciliate. Palea apex obtuse; ciliate. Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped.

FLOWER Lodicules 3; membranous. Anthers 3. Stigmas 3. Ovary glabrous.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp.

DISTRIBUTION Asia-tropical: Indo-China.
