Deyeuxia erectifolia

HABIT Perennial; caespitose; clumped densely. Culms 100–150 cm long. Culm-internodes antrorsely scabrous. Leaf-sheaths smooth, or scaberulous. Ligule an eciliate membrane; 2–3 mm long. Leaf-blades erect; involute; 50–75 cm long; 1 mm wide; stiff. Leaf-blade surface scabrous.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle open; pyramidal; 15–29 cm long. Primary panicle branches spreading, or drooping; whorled at most nodes; 5–10 cm long. Panicle axis with lower internodes 3–5 cm long; scabrous. Panicle branches capillary; flexuous; scabrous.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; with a barren rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate; laterally compressed; 4–5 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Floret callus pilose. Floret callus hairs 1 mm long; 0.25 length of lemma.

GLUMES Glumes persistent; similar; reaching apex of florets; firmer than fertile lemma; gaping. Lower glume lanceolate; 4–5 mm long; 1 length of upper glume; membranous; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Lower glume primary vein scabrous. Lower glume lateral veins absent. Lower glume apex acute. Upper glume lanceolate; 4–5 mm long; 1 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous; 1-keeled; 3 -veined. Upper glume primary vein scabrous. Upper glume apex acute.

FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate; 4 mm long; membranous; without keel; 5 -veined. Lemma surface smooth, or asperulous. Lemma apex muticous. Rhachilla extension 2–3 mm long; pilose.

FLOWER Anthers 3.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp.

DISTRIBUTION North America: Mexico.
