Pleioblastus pseudosasaoides

HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes elongated; leptomorph. Culms 300–400 cm long; 8–13 mm diam.; woody. Culm-internodes terete; hollow; distally glabrous. Culm-nodes glabrous. Lateral branches dendroid. Culm-sheaths pilose; without auricles. Leaf-sheaths glabrous on surface. Leaf-sheath oral hairs setose; pale. Ligule an eciliate membrane, or a ciliolate membrane. Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades deciduous at the ligule; lanceolate; 24–30 cm long; 18–22 mm wide. Leaf-blade surface glabrous. Leaf-blade apex acuminate.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence comprising only a few spikelets; comprising 1–2 fertile spikelets.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 6–9 fertile florets; with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets linear; laterally compressed; 40–70 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Rhachilla internodes 7–8 mm long; pubescent.

GLUMES Glumes two; persistent; similar; shorter than spikelet. Lower glume ovate; 13–14 mm long; chartaceous; without keels; 5 -veined. Lower glume apex acuminate. Upper glume ovate; chartaceous; without keels; 7 -veined. Upper glume lateral veins obscure. Upper glume apex acuminate.

FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate; 13–15 mm long; chartaceous; without keel; 13–15 -veined. Lemma lateral veins with cross-veins. Lemma apex acuminate. Palea 9–10 mm long; 12–14 -veined. Palea keels ciliate. Palea surface pubescent; hairy on back. Palea apex with excurrent keel veins. Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped.

FLOWER Lodicules 3; 4 mm long; veined; ciliate. Anthers 3; 6 mm long. Stigmas 3.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp; apex unappendaged.

DISTRIBUTION Asia-temperate: eastern Asia.
