Leaf-sheaths tubular for much of their length. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blades persistent (5), or deciduous at the ligule (1); filiform (2), or linear (4).

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle open (4), or contracted (2). Primary panicle branches not whorled (5), or whorled at most nodes (1).

Spikelets appressed; solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels filiform (5/5).

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets linear (4), or lanceolate (2); subterete (4), or dorsally compressed (2); 9–12.1–18 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Floret callus bearded.

GLUMES Glumes persistent; shorter than spikelet (2), or reaching apex of florets (4); thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume lanceolate (4), or ovate (2); 0.66–0.8133–1 length of upper glume; hyaline (4), or membranous (2); without keels; 1 -veined. Lower glume lateral veins absent. Lower glume surface without pits. Lower glume apex acute (3), or acuminate (3). Upper glume lanceolate (4), or ovate (2); 0.25–0.765–1 length of adjacent fertile lemma; hyaline (4), or membranous (2); with undifferentiated margins (5), or hyaline margins (1); without keels; 1 -veined (3), or 3 -veined (3). Upper glume apex acute (3), or acuminate (3).

FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate; subterete (1/1); coriaceous; without keel; wingless; 5 -veined (2), or 7 -veined (4), or 8–9 -veined (2). Lemma surface smooth (5), or asperulous (1), or scabrous (2); unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma margins flat (2), or involute (4); exposing palea (2), or interlocking with palea keels (4). Lemma apex dentate (4), or lobed (2); 2 -fid; incised 0.1–0.175–0.25 of lemma length; awned; 1 -awned. Principal lemma awn from a sinus (1), or dorsal (5); geniculate. Palea 1 length of lemma; membranous (2), or coriaceous (4). Palea keels separated (2), or contiguous above a sulcus (4); smooth (5), or scabrous (1). Palea apex dentate (2/2).

FLOWER Lodicules 2; united; fleshy; truncate. Anthers 3.
