HABIT Perennial. Culms 200–300 cm long. Leaf-sheath auricles erect. Ligule an eciliate membrane.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle open.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels cuneate.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 2 basal sterile florets; 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate; laterally compressed; 17–20 mm long; falling entire.

GLUMES Glumes both absent or obscure.

FLORETS Basal sterile florets barren; without significant palea. Lemma of lower sterile floret ovate; membranous; 1 -veined; cuspidate. Fertile lemma elliptic; indurate; keeled; wingless; 5 -veined. Lemma lateral veins ribbed. Lemma surface scaberulous; unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma margins involute. Lemma apex rostrate; with a conical beak; awned. Palea 1 length of lemma; indurate; 3 -veined; without keels.

FLOWER Lodicules 2. Anthers 6.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp.

DISTRIBUTION South America.
