Peyritschia

HABIT Perennial. Culms erect (1/2), or decumbent (1/2); slender (2/3), or weak (1/3); 5–56.15–100 cm long. Lateral branches lacking (2/2). Ligule an eciliate membrane.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle open (3), or contracted (2), or spiciform (2).

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 2 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension (1), or with a barren rhachilla extension (5), or with diminished florets at the apex (1). Spikelets oblong (4), or cuneate (3); laterally compressed; 3–4.662–6.1 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Rhachilla internodes definite; glabrous (2), or pilose (4), or villous (1). Floret callus pubescent (6), or pilose (1).

GLUMES Glumes persistent; shorter than spikelet (1), or reaching apex of florets (3), or exceeding apex of florets (4); thinner than fertile lemma; parallel to lemmas (4), or gaping (3). Lower glume linear (1), or lanceolate (4), or elliptic (2); 0.9–0.9929–1 length of upper glume; hyaline (1), or membranous (6); 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Lower glume lateral veins absent. Lower glume surface without pits. Lower glume apex acute (5), or acuminate (1), or setaceously attenuate (1). Upper glume linear (1), or lanceolate (4), or elliptic (2); 0.75–1.214–1.7 length of adjacent fertile lemma; hyaline (1), or membranous (6); 1-keeled; 1 -veined (4), or 3 -veined (3). Upper glume apex acute (5), or acuminate (2).

FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate (3), or elliptic (1), or oblong (3); subterete (1/1); membranous (4), or cartilaginous (3); without keel (1/6), or keeled (5/6); wingless; 5 -veined. Lemma surface smooth (6), or scaberulous (1); unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma margins flat (6), or involute (1). Lemma apex entire (1), or dentate (3), or lobed (3); 2 -fid (5/6), or 4 -fid (1/6); incised 0.2 of lemma length; obtuse (4/4); awned; 1 -awned. Principal lemma awn dorsal; straight (1), or geniculate (6). Palea embraced by lemma (4), or gaping (3); 0.7–0.875–1 length of lemma; hyaline (3), or membranous (4). Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped (1/1).

FLOWER Lodicules 2 (1/1). Anthers 2 (4/6), or 3 (2/6). Ovary glabrous (2/2).

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp (6/6); fusiform (2/2). Embryo 0.3 length of caryopsis. Hilum punctiform (3/3).

DISTRIBUTION North America (5), or South America (6).
