Wakehurst hosts five National Plant Collections (birches, southern beeches, St. Johns worts, Eucryphia and Skimmia).

The Skimmia collection is a beautiful addition to our gardens, with domed evergreen shrubs bearing small fragrant flowers in spring.

There are separate male and female plants in this genus, so we need both to produce the wonderful displays of berries the females bear at this time of year.

Found in red or white, the berries last throughout the winter months and include ‘Wakehurst White’ — our own variety.

At Wakehurst the plants can be seen by the Stables restaurant, in the Winter Garden and in the Kangaroo Pen.
