Royal visit

Prince Turki of Saudi Arabia is presenting some special palm trees to Kew. Dave Barnes has the precarious job of moving them across the Gardens to get them into place. With Prince Charles due to join Prince Turki for the planting the following day, plans are thrown into disarray as 50 mph gusts of wind hit the Gardens. As trees and limbs fall, the Gardens are closed for the first time in 15 years and visitors have to be evacuated.

Leafcutter ants

Climbers and Creepers, Kew ’s interactive botanical play area for children, is about to receive some new inhabitants. The fierce leafcutter ants need to be moved from the Princess of Wales Conservatory. Care has to be taken as Phil Griffiths becomes their first casualty. Kew’s collections cannot afford a visit from the marauding ants.

Carnivorous Plants

Most of Kew ’s plants are grown behind the scenes. Meat eating plants take special looking after and responsibility for them falls to Kath King. Over the years the collection of carnivorous plants has been extended with the support of the Carnivorous Plant Society, and here they pay their annual visit.
