Young Horticulturist of the Year

Student Dan Leighton has reached the final of the competition and Ian Leese and supporters from the School of Horticulture head off to Birmingham to cheer him on.

Wollemi Pine comes to Kew

Kew receives its shipment of Wollemi pines from Sydney and after a spell in quarantine the trees are planted out in the nurseries and island at Kew for testing in a British climate. The public display tree has a special cage built and is planted by Sir David Attenborough in front of the media.

Madagascar

Phil Griffiths heads to Madagascar to help with plant cultivation and propagation. They have to ensure that the areas of the island that they work can be maintained as much as possible and look at the impact of clear felling of the island for subsistence farming.

Zip Wire at Woodland Wonders

The Tree Gang set up their ever popular zip wire at the annual May Bank Holiday festival at Kew. Utilising their tree working skills the line is set up and tested – it’s not all plain sailing…
