BBC's 'A Year at Kew'
Episode 7
The Wheatfield
In the south end of the garden one of Kew’s more unusual
summer exhibits for 2003 is the wheatfield, filled with wild flowers.
The field has been a labour of love for the staff who sowed these
seeds the old-fashioned way, back in May, and harvested the crop
using only scythes.
They want to see if it’s possible to make a loaf of bread
out of the grains....to be enjoyed by the Tree Gang with some of
Kew’s honey if they are lucky!
Cycads
The Palm House is home to many ancient cycads and, rather unusually,
two have developed cones at the same time, one male and one female.
There's an anxious wait to see if they will mature at the same time
so they will be able to be pollinated. Will this be successful?
Kew Medal
At 64 Andy McClure is Kew’s Tree Gang’s oldest member.
Jon Hammerton, one of the many people Andy has helped in his 21
years at Kew, is hoping Andy will be nominated for a Kew Medal,
awarded to outstanding members of staff.
Preparation for Japan
Ray Townsend and Roger Howard are preparing to go off on a major
plant hunting expedition to an island off the coast of Japan and
are hitting a few snags. Not only is there the language barrier
but they find out that they are going at the same time as typhoon
season.
