Seed collecting in Madagascar

Seed collector Stuart Cable is still having no luck in finding the fast disappearing spiny forest in the hot and difficult climate of Madagascar.

After many false dawns and much help from the locals he finally finds the illusive forest and the team make important seed collections although not, unfortunately, the endangered Aloe suzannae.

Re-planting Pagoda Vista

Six months ago Tony Kirkham travelled to one of the great tree supermarkets in Tuscany to choose new trees for the regenration of part of Kew’s historic Pagoda vista. Now in December, despite the frozen ground and a scattering of snow, the trees have arrived and Tony and his team need to plant them as quickly as possible.

Heating the Waterlily House

The cold temperatures of winter have caused problems for the tropical collection in the Waterlily House. For some unknown reason the heating in the house is not working bringing temperatures dangerously low. The search for the problem heads underground, along the underground passages of the Palm House and up the elegant Victorian campanile.

Orchid verification

Lara Jewitt looks after Kew’s vast orchid collection in the Lower Nursery and one of her jobs is to make sure all the plants are properly identified and labelled.

One cold winter morning an unnamed orchid is in flower, so Lara can take it to the Herbarium for Dave Roberts, the expert, to try and identify it.
