About Wild View

The success of ‘Wild View’ depends on two important factors: nature and technology.

The nature factor can prove to be unpredictable at the best of times, but by using ‘Box Watch’ miniature cameras we have found a system that provides pin sharp video images of nesting activity time after time.

The nest boxes we use are specially designed to take a miniature camera which slots inside the roof chamber. The box contains an internal illumination system which enhances the quality of video images.

The camera is installed when the nest box is put out. This avoids any disturbance to the occupants during the initial stages of nest building.

The camera is linked via a cable. Each camera can operate at a distance of up to 200 metres. For longer distances we have installed a radio transmitter system which enables us to film in the far reaches of the estate.

We are already preparing for spring 2006. A greater range of nest boxes will be located around the gardens which we hope will attract a wider variety of birds. Each nest box will again be adopted by a member of staff and by filming all the action we hope to continue to unlock the wildlife secrets of Wakehurst Place.
