The nearby magnolias and rhododendrons also start their show in the spring. The Spring Border helps emphasise the background to the Mansion Pond, adding greater interest with some bold vertical accents in the form of Sorbus 'Dirkenii' and Prunus 'Ukon'.

The Japanese maples at the north end of the Spring Border are particularly attractive for their great variety of shape, leaf form and autumn colour. The plants here predate Kew's role in the gardens and were probably established by Lady Price.
