Christmas at Kew - evening event access information
Information about accessibility to the illuminated trail and details of parking and other facilities for disabled visitors and their carers.
Carer goes free
Disabled ticket holders are entitled to one free ticket for an essential carer/companion to accompany them to the event. See detailed ticket information.
There are three marked disabled parking spaces on Kew Green c. 700m from the event entrance at Victoria Gate. These are public spaces on the public highway and are available on a first come, first served basis. Kew is unable to reserve any spaces specifically so we advise drivers to leave in plenty of time to secure a parking space closest to the Victoria Gate entrance.
Access to the illuminated trail
The illuminated trail is approximately 1.4 miles/2.3 km in length. The trail has been designed to create an intimate and atmospheric trail around the natural landscape of Kew Gardens, this will include tarmac, stone chipped and grass paths that are available to public during normal operating hours. Where paths cross areas of grass, secondary pedestrian matting will be put in place to create a more accessible path in good weather conditions. Where weather conditions are not good and create soft ground, alternative routes will be provided on tarmac paths making some areas easier to navigate, although this will change the nature of the experience provided.
For customers who have mobility issues and require the use of wheelchairs and walking aids it should be noted that the trail will take you off tarmac paths, due to the nature of the natural landscape of the venue routes off tarmac paths will be undulating and not completely flat under foot.
For customers who are bringing pushchairs the paths and secondary matting will provide a sufficiently stable path for access around the trail, but once again paths off tarmac will be undulating and not completely flat underfoot.
If weather conditions mean that the trail is not fully accessible for people using wheeled mobility aids, consideration will be made on a case by case basis to allow tickets to be transferred to an alternative date when the ground conditions are more appropriate.
What to bring and wear
Please be aware that this event is held outdoors and there are no covered areas during the walk, so do ensure you have sufficient warm and waterproof clothing. In some areas the lighting will be low level as this is part of the experience. We do encourage visitors to bring along a torch in case of an emergency – this should not be used unless it is necessary.
There are accessible toilets:
- At the entrance to the event at Victoria Plaza, Victoria Gate.
- Approximately half way round the illuminated trail.
Wheelchair access and guide dogs
- Wheelchairs are available to borrow on a first come, first served basis. Mobility scooters are not available.
- Guide dogs or registered disability assistance dogs are allowed within the Gardens. Other dogs are not allowed.
Lighting and special effects
There will be lighting sequences created within the lighting design that will have some flashing lights contained within them, however, these will not be strobe lighting. We have worked to guidelines on photosensitive epilepsy and will adhere to the industry standard of synchronising effects and locking the sequences to ensure that lights do not operate at more than 5 flashes per second.
Box office staff will have further details of where these effects will be situated on the trail. Signage will be placed at a minimum of 100m before the effect along with a route alternative should it be required.
Stewarding staff will be able to assist with locations and routes.
