About the artist
Barbara Oozeerally worked as an architect in Warsaw between 1976 and 1979 and later as a fashion designer before beginning to paint full-time in England in 1996. From an early age she created very detailed drawings of plants from her parents' garden and when, in 1996, she bought Contemporary Botanical Artists by Dr Shirley Sherwood, she realised that botanical art was becoming an increasingly popular subject area for many artists and was inspired to work in this genre.
Buy the book
Magnolias in Art and Cultivation, the illustrated book to accompany the exhibition, features over 150 beautiful, full-colour botanical paintings by artist Barbara Oozeerally, who captures these plants in breathtakingly beautiful detail. The book contains not only well-known and loved magnolias, but also some that are less familiar and very unusual.
Published by Kew Publishing in association with the Royal Horticultural Society.
Over the subsequent years, Barbara has tackled many plant subjects, starting with plants such as irises, tulips and the wild flowers growing in her London garden. As her confidence grew, she was attracted to paint pine cones, gourds, ornamental pumpkins, colourful Indian corns, and protea seed heads. Her precision, commitment and dedication to the subject are appreciated by many art collectors and art societies. She has won many awards in England and abroad.
The magnolia paintings
In 2005, Barbara embarked on a nine-year project to produce over 150 paintings of magnolias, both species and hybrids. She travelled widely in England and Europe, working closely with owners of gardens, head gardeners and magnolia experts. All the paintings are life size: every bud, flower, branch, leaf and seed head measured, sketched and colour sample taken in situ, with many paintings requiring long research and many weeks to finish. Dr Shirley Sherwood describes them as ‘an extraordinary series of important and beautiful plants’.
