Stunning images of the animals and birds, large and small, for which the diverse array of plants at Kew provide food and shelter, are displayed in the light-filled space of the Nash Conservatory.

Based on wildlife photographer Heather Angel’s book, ‘Wild Kew’, the images displayed capture the beauty, strangeness and variety of the insects, frogs, reptiles, birds and mammals which thrive in the Gardens. Maternal wildfowl, nocturnal newts and pollinating invertebrates all feature in this celebration of the wealth of wildlife to be found at Kew.

MK Canada Geese
A multi-family group of Canada geese stroll down Syon Vista Heather Angel/Natural Visions

In high summer it is a common sight to see extended families of Canada geese sauntering through the Gardens.

Broods of geese in the same vicinity often amalgamate.;in 2008 three broods from the Lake, comprising six adults and a crèche of ten goslings, joined forces. Such gregarious behaviour provides extra protection with more adults on the lookout for predators.

  • Did you know that some oak trees are evergreen? The trees in the background of this photograph are evergreen Holm oaks (Quercus ilex). Their name is an ancient word for holly due to the holly-like appearance of the leaves. In Spain, boiled Holm oak acorns are an important food for free range pigs reared for the production of Serrano ham.  In many Mediterranean countries the highly prized truffle fungus colonises Holm oak tree roots.
