The Pavilion restaurant BBQ
About the Pavilion restaurant
With its gorgeous vine-sheltered terrace, The Pavilion really comes into its own in summer, although it’s a great place to re-energise in the spring and autumn too. We offer a variety of meals at the Pavilion, from freshly-prepared hot dishes to a well-stocked salad counter, the full range of Peyton and Byrne great British cakes and, best of all, superb terrace barbecues when the weather’s nice. If the Pavilion really takes your fancy, it’s also available for private functions on summer evenings.
The Pavilion restaurant is open all weekend, weather permitting. Please check before you travel.
Sample menu
Inspired by the chillis growing in the Waterlily House, we have made our own Kew Chilli. Mild and sweet in flavour, we use a ginger, garlic and chilli base, some ripe plum tomato and finish with toasted coriander seeds and leaves.
All of our chicken is soaked in a herb brine, lightly poached, then barbecued and brushed with our Kew Chilli Sauce.

Flat-pressed half spring chicken £4.95
Whole spring chicken £7.50
Half herb-fed chicken £8.50

Very disappointing indeed - we went with some friends (not Kew regulars), expecting the salads - but just before 1pm there was very little on offer, and some of the serving bowls empty and no sign of replenishment. I had some salad, which was nice, but I was scraping the bowls. There was nothing to go with it ie no quiche, no meat, no salmon. The others had sandwiches which they thought weren't fresh, certainly not made that day, though they were eatable. When I mentioned the lack of salad to a member of staff, the response was "well we have been busy" - and this before 1pm! Compare this with Peyton & Byrne's cafe at the Wellcome building on Euston Road - lovely little quiches and a good choice of salad, and decent helpings. Peyton & Byrne should be very concerned about how the Pavilion is being run, and take steps to improve it quickly.

Sadly the worst meal I have had in ages. Only things on offer were Fish & Chips. 4 different salads. No quiche, cold meat. Long queues. No forks. Expensive and all this at peak time. 1.15pm on a Bank Holiday!!

Here is not much of information about it. Is it possible to book for a table for lunch in April now? Are you guys open?

I agree with most of the comments, lovely setting but food too expensive and bread very hard especially rolls which make a good weight to stop napkins blowing away. Just hope the salad prices haven't gone up again. Used to be about £4 for a small bowl.

Agree with the previous posts and comments from J Rose. The Pavilion is a great location at the furthest point of the gardens and we really miss it during the Winter. Even if it is not possible to operate a full menu, could you possibly open throughout the year and offer a smaller, limited, sandwich and hot drinks menu. The summer Pimms and BBQ was wonderful and I hope you repeat this summer. However, please, please change the bread for sandwiches - always hard, too thick and too tough... Sorry!

Please open the Pavilion sooner than 28 March - we love to eat there and hate it being closed during the winter months. Can you open it sooner?!

We are Members of Kew and really love it. However, we don't understand the catering policy: why is The Pavilion closed in winter? On a sunny day it causes massive queues at the other restaurants. Also, all the restaurants sell the same only vaguely edible sandwiches - the fillings are wierd, not wonderful and there are only so many egg mayonnaise ones I can eat! The bread is also usually hard. Please can this be sorted out - especially as the hot food, cakes and salads are all good, but we only want a sandwich! I am also concerned about the plastic cups used - environment policy?

It's now more than a week since my comments drew the (automated?) reply: "Hi Lionel, We've passed your comments on to our catering team who will follow up directly with you. Thanks for taking the time to provide feedback to us. Kew Feedback Team" I've not heard anything from them yet. Are they all on holiday?

A visit to Kew Gardens is hugely enjoyable: not cheap, but well worth the money. Sadly, though, the same is not true of the catering. Our meal in the Pavilion yesterday took the edge off an otherwise delightful day. It's average-quality motorway cafeteria catering at restaurant prices. Portions are minute; they were more or less thrown onto the plate; and there was a pathetically small selection of soft drinks on offer (no apple juice, for example). The likes of Morrisons and Tesco can serve up food of comparable quality for (literally) half the price. I'm afraid we'll be bringing a picnic next time we visit.

Unfortunately this restaurant has gone downhill in recent months. The bowls at the salad bar have been poorly washed, this also makes one wonder about hygiene in other areas. Paper cups have replaced china over about the last month (at least these must be clean!). Trays, knifes, forks and spoons are frequently running out. It seems to be understaffed even on wet weekday lunchtimes and maybe this is a root cause of other problems. The staff on duty seem helpful but overwhelmed - seems to be an upper management/financial problem?

In my opinion worst "so called restaurant" I ever been too.maybe tea and biscuit are fine in there, but so it should've been coffee shop not restaurant.i bought a burger which was rock hard and dry meat,so after a bite had a fear for my teeth broke Love the gardens and will return there over and over again, but will always look over my shoulder to try and avoid that place u call "restaurant"

Quite agree with the above - it's very pleasant on a warm afternoon. But 'lakeside"? Have they moved the lake? Nevertheless, it's a our favourite. Pity we have to wait until the end of March for it. John Norrish
