Black Butt
Black Butt was originally made from the base of an elm tree that had succumbed to Dutch elm disease. It was quite rotten, so Nash cut out all the obvious spots of decay. He then charred it for his 2010 Yorkshire Sculpture Park show, where he paired it with Black Trunk. Now in bronze, it is shown separately here at Kew Gardens.

Wonderful: looks rather as I imagine a meteorite might look, if it fell to earth quietly. Its massive blackness is a great contrast to the fresh green all around.
