Introducing crocus "Whitewell Purple"

Crocus "Whitewell Purple" (Crocus tommasinianus) will grow in almost all soil types and in full sun or partial shade, producing lavender star shaped flowers and deep yellow stamens in February and March each year. A sure sign that spring is around the corner. The petals fade to white towards the centre, and each one has three darker stripes, running from top to bottom.

Crocus 'Whitewell Purple' is one of the first crocuses to bloom, leading them to be known as early or snow crocuses. They naturalise very easily and multiply quickly below ground.  If warm enough, the flower will open right out, forming a flat star shape.

The bridge by The Slips at Wakehurst where Crocus tommasinianus grows.

Planted in a huge drift along east of the stream of the Slips, Crocus "Whitewell Purple" produces beautiful flowers in delightful shades of blue, mauve and purple.

This area was set out as a collection of mixed specimen trees and shrubs, by Gerald Loder (later Lord Wakehurst of Ardingly), who bought Wakehurst Place in 1933.

In early summer the grass is filled with wild flowers, including the Jersey orchid (Anacamptis laxiflora).

Kew is taking part in the 'Big Give Christmas Challenge'

09 Nov 2012
This year, Kew is taking part in the 'Big Give Christmas Challenge', a campaign to encourage philanthropic giving by matching a donors’ gift. Effectively your donation to the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership could be doubled! We need to raise £50,000 for next year’s seed collecting trips, as well as expanding our work on using existing collections. Please note: This campaign ran from 6 to 19 December 2012 and has now finished.
