Introducing Cyclamen
Cyclamen hederifolium is found in Greece and western Turkey, in deciduous woodland and at the margins of coniferous woods. It is frost hardy, flowers in autumn and has beautifully marked leaves that grow through winter and spring. It is one of the best species for garden planting in England. The flowers vary in colour from white through pale pink to a deep magenta, with the leaves varying in size, shape and markings.
Cyclamen coum is found in Turkey, Syria and Israel in similar habitats. Although less tolerant of the UK climate, it will thrive where the soil is not too heavy in light shade. Leaves grow in autumn but flowers do not appear until early in the new year, and like the C. hederifloium, the flowers vary in colour.

Cyclamen at Wakehurst
Two species of Cyclamen have been planted beneath the oaks at Wakehurst, just past the Visitor Centre, providing a wonderful welcome to the Gardens.
The autumn flowering Cyclamen hederifolium is a mass of pink and white flowers, and as late winter moves to early spring Cyclamen coum come into flower and bring colour and warmth to the Gardens.
Although common in cultivation these beautiful plants are nowadays threatened in the wild.
