The Conophytum calculus and others in its genus, have adapted to survive the long and dry summers of the Namaqualand desert (a large area extending along the west coast of Namibia and South Africa) by reducing their leaves and stems to small round structures, minimising leaf surface area and therefore loss of water. They are often called pebble or button plants as a result.
