Applying for KLARF and Prance Fellowships

Important update on funding

The final tranche of funding for KLARF Fellowships was allocated in March 2008. Unless and until we are able to identify alternative sources of support, we regret that there will be no more calls for applications.

Administrative requirements and details
  • Travel plan: Fellows need to agree their travel plans beforehand with the KLARF Programme Executive in order to arrange payments for tickets, etc.
  • Visas: Fellows will be responsible for arranging any visas that may be necessary for their travel to the UK and within Europe, and for the costs of such visas.
  • Health and other insurance: The cost of insurance is not included in the Fellowship grant.
  • Permission to visit institutes: Successful candidates are expected to make formal requests to visit institutes on their travel itinerary in good time.
  • Contact with collaborators: Candidates whose proposals involve collaboration are expected to have obtained approval from their European partners for their plans before submitting their proposal to KLARF.
  • Travel: KLARF administration will organize Fellows' travel to the UK and their return flights, but Fellows are expected to organize their own travel within Europe, using information and advice from KLARF.
  • Accommodation: KLARF administration will arrange accommodation for Fellows arriving in London. Subsequent changes of accommodation and accommodation during visits to other institutes in Europe will be the responsibility of the Fellows.

Expected outputs
  • Fellows are required to give a short (ca. 30 minute) oral presentation of their work during their stay at Kew.
  • Fellows are required to provide a short report within 4 weeks of completing their Fellowship. This should give an account of the main activities and results obtained.
  • Fellows are also urged to provide the KLARF Programme Executive with details, and if possible, copies, of all publications resulting from their Fellowship. This is important for demonstrating the productivity of the Programme.
  • Due acknowledgement of the support provided by the Fellowships should be included in all relevant outputs (publications, conference proceedings etc.), making clear reference to the specific fellowship awarded (i.e. Andrew W. Mellon or Prance).
Brazilian long-term visitors

Visitors from Brazil intending to stay for more than six months will need to make the necessary visa arrangements BEFORE travelling to the UK. It is recommended that you take the latest advice from the UK Consulate. The following advice was received from the Consular Section (Rio de Janeiro) in September 2005:

"Your fellows will need to submit:

a) form VAF1 (available on www.reinounido.org.br);

b) two colour photos (3x4cm);

c) letter of acceptance for Academic visitor stating that the person will be doing research (usually has the words "visiting researcher" or something similar;

d) Evidence that the person has sufficient funds to maintain and accommodate him/herself without work or recourse to public funds, usually six months of bank statements + six months payslips;

e) Evidence of accommodation in the UK;

f) fees: visa-R$383.00; return postage-R$30,00. Please note that fees must be paid in local currency. Fees vary but you can find current fees on our website."
