The Victorian Conservation Seedbank
The Victorian Conservation Seedbank project: from coastal heathlands to snowy mountains, supporting the species recovery and habitat management programmes in the State.
The Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne (RBGM) is the home of The Victorian Conservation Seedbank. This partnership is one of seven Australian partnerships in the Millennium Seed Bank Project (MSBP).
Locally, the long-term storage of seed and research into germination requirements will support existing conservation measures, including habitat restoration and the reintroduction of plant species, initiated under the Victorian Flora and Fauna Guarantee (FFG) Act and the national Endangered Species and Biodiversity Conservation Act.
The Project addresses both the ex situ and in situ conservation of Victorian species and ecological communities. The project purpose will be addressed through the delivery of the following three Project outputs:
1. Establishment of a facility to maintain a secure, vouchered, long-term seed collection of Victorian threatened and otherwise significant plant species that is available and utilized for recovery activities
2. Increased knowledge and capacity to collect and conserve seed within staff of RBGM and DSE
3. Bringing about an understanding within government and the broader community of the critical role of seed collections in an integrated approach to species and community conservation and restoration.
The project aims to collect and bank 450 species new to the MSBP and to provide two technical training attachments.
