Lamiaceae for Flora Malesiana

Clerodendrum sp., Harapan forest, Sumatra

The current account of the Lamiaceae (Labiatae) in the Flora Malesiana series needs updating following changes to the family (Harley et al., 2004).  Recently a number of large tropical woody genera, species rich in Malesia, were transferred from the Verbenaceae to the Lamiaceae.  Efforts are currently focused on revising the largest and most problematic of these genera: Clerodendrum L. (c. 100 spp.), Callicarpa L. (c. 70 spp.) and Premna L. (c. 70 spp.).  Accounts of other smaller genera, such as Vitex L. and Teijsmanniodendron Koord. are already complete.  Some taxonomic complexities unresolved by the existing account will be tackled in an undergraduate project.
