CITES Trade Research
Timber trade map from CITES and Plants
Trade research is carried out on CITES listed plants and on plants that may require regulation by CITES and the EU Wildlife Trade regulations to ensure the sustainability of their trade. This research is ongoing to support our advice to Defra.
At present, background work is being carried out to review trade in selected tree species regulated by CITES. Information from such ongoing work is used to support the non-detriment findings required when we advise on an application to import a regulated species. Species are also researched prior to discussions at the EU CITES Scientific Review Group where recommendations may be considered to restrict or ban entry of certain species to the European Union. Work may also be done as part of the CITES Significant Trade Programme which reviews possible detrimental trade on a formal basis on behalf of the CITES Conference of the Parties. In addition, one-off research projects are also carried out, for example, at present we are carrying out a review of trade in non-CITES species from China in trade for horticulture. Products include reports, briefings and advice for non-detriment findings.
