Qualifications & Appointments

BSc (Hons), Univ. Leeds, 1992

MSc, Univ. London (Birkbeck College), 1995.

Role

Management of EM unit, visitors and staff; supervision and training; comparative and developmental anatomy and ultrastructural research.

Specialising in transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM and SEM). Current research work is focused on evaluating ultrastructural and structural characters of systematic and phylogenetic importance. Of particular interest is the ultrastructure and development of non-protoplasmic cell inclusions in Monocotyledons, using both light and electron microscopy. Structures under investigation include calcium oxalate crystals in the form of raphides, styloids and druses, and silica bodies in various forms, the results being utilised in collaborative morphological character analyses.
