Role
CITES implementation and policy advice, researching trade in tree species and development of capacity-building tools and modules.
To support the Convention & Policies Section in coordinating the institution’s role as the UK CITES Scientific Authority (SA) for plants, to facilitate the implementation of institutional policy on the Convention and develop Kew’s position as a centre of expertise on CITES. Carry out research necessary to formulate advice to Defra and other partners within the EU and internationally. Principal focus is the formulation and provision of scientific advice on CITES permits to Defra and research on key species in trade, in particular CITES-listed timber species. Design and develop capacity-building and enforcement lectures and tools on CITES plant trade and policy issues for a range of clients at national, EU and international level. These include the ‘UK Guidelines for the implementation of the EU Wildlife trade Regulations for Mahogany, Afrormosia and Ramin’ – a step-by-step guide for customs officers on the importation of timber species into the UK. Design and develop CITES modules for Kew’s International Diploma courses, UK university courses, the Kew Diploma in Horticulture course and Kew staff. Represent the UK at CITES for a, such as the EU Enforcement Group and Scientific Review Group, and the CITES Conference of the Parties (CoP). Provision of CITES policy advice and training for Kew staff and UK Overseas Territories (UKOT) partners working on UKOT projects. Kew representative on the UK Overseas Territories Conservation Forum and the Forum’s South Atlantic Working Group.
