Role
Pure and applied plant anatomy; sustainable tropical fuelwood production.
Systematic anatomy of angiosperms, especially Monocots and xerophytes, functional aspects of plant structure, identification of fragmentary plant material; sustainable management of dry tropical woodland for fuelwood and charcoal production. Projects include: research for and editing material for volumes in the series ‘Anatomy of the Monocotyledons’ and ‘Anatomy of the Dicotyledons’; Drylands: tropical forest wood, structure, uses and conservation – (a) Fuel wood improvement in Zimbabwe (EU Berkeley Reforestation Trust and Glaxo-Wellcome funded), (b) NE Brazil: sustainable use of trees for charcoal production (Clothworkers’ Guild funded).
