Euphorbieae, particularly in Tropical Africa and especially succulent species; Aloe, particularly in Tropical Africa.

Before retirement systematic botanist in the Euphorbiaceae section of the Kew Herbarium. Prepared accounts of Euphorbieae for ‘Flora of Tropical East Africa’, ‘Flora Zambesiaca’ and ‘Flora of Somalia’. Also Aloe and relatives for ‘Flora of Tropical East Africa’ and ‘Flora Zambesiaca’. Since retiring in 1999, continuing to name material and answer queries on these same groups in the Herbarium and especially in Kew’s horticultural collections, as well as queries from abroad. Presently working on third volume to accompany 'The Aloes of South Africa' (1950) and 'The Aloes of Tropical Africa and Madagascar' (1996) by G.W. Reynolds, to include all species described since, all taxonomic revisions and a key to aid identification of all known taxa, about 500 in total (with co-authors: Prof. L.E. Newton, Kenyatta University, Nairobi and J.J. Lavranos, Portugal).
