Role
Plant diversity and conservation in Africa and Madagascar.
Millennium Seed Bank Project (MSBP) responsibilities include: coordinating identification of herbarium specimens from partner countries (Australia, Burkina Faso, Botswana, Chile, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mexico, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania and USA); advising the MSBP and partners on taxonomic issues; specimen management and database development; developing a database and GIS for the MSBP and Kew teams in Madagascar; advising on priority species targeting and collection strategies; and managing a herbarium botanist and a roaming seed collector. Institutional responsibilities include: leading the Madagascar Science Team and managing RBG Kew's office and facilities in Madagascar. The next few years will be critical for conservation in Madagascar with the identification, gazetting, rehabilitation and increased protection of new and existing reserves with a planned increase from 1.7 to 6 million hectares. I will continue the development of our in country team to facilitate this process, developing an integrated programme building on our strengths and successes in taxonomic research, GIS and databasing, ecology, horticulture and ex-situ conservation. We will also develop a series of non-technical identification guides aimed at the conservation community in Madagascar.
