Lake and Pinetum

The Lake, which is artificial, is fringed by many moisture-loving trees and shrubs. On it and the surrounding lawns is an extensive selection of ornamental waterfowl. The area between the Lake and Queen's Cottage Grounds is planted with conifers. These trees are dominant in the important timber producing regions of the northern forests in Europe, Asia and America, and many have been adapted to withstand harsh environmental conditions. The northern species, with their small leaves, are resistant to winter cold and drought, while the Californian giant redwood has spongy bark enabling it to survive forest fires. Others are adapted to arid conditions. On the southern side of the Lake, conifers from the temperate regions of South America include the bizarre monkey puzzle trees (Araucaria spp.).
