Conservation Checklist of the Trees of Uganda

The first conservation checklist for East Africa will deal with some 800 tree species; each species will be assessed for its conservation status, and those in the Vulnerable or Endangered categories will be given a full treatment with local names, uses, maps and images.

Now the Flora of Tropical East Africa is nearing completion, we are developing spin-offs that will be directly useful to the countries concerned. In consultation with co-author James Kalema at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda, a listing of all the trees in Uganda (some 840) will provide a useful taxonomic update to the most recent tree Flora (1952). In addition, we wish to include conservation status assessments for all 840 species. Those species that have an IUCN rating of ‘Vulnerable’ or higher/worse, will be given a treatment that includes a full description, an illustration, a distribution map, notes on habitat, conservation status, local names and local uses.

This project started in 2005 and we hope to publish in 2007.
