CBD Capacity Building

To help build capacity among botanists and horticulturists to understand and comply with CBD provisions and national laws by providing training and training materials.

This project occurs at Kew, national and international levels and is linked to the ‘CBD for Botanists’ and ‘CITES Capacity Building’ projects. The outputs of this project include the design and delivery of:

·        flexible training modules at Kew to international diploma course students, UK-based MSc/BSc courses, Kew staff and students. These involve a mix of lectures, computer quizzes, interactive discussion exercises and/or role-plays, on the CBD and related issues such as access and benefit-sharing (ABS), traditional knowledge and the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA). Modules have also been delivered at the International University of Andalucía and the Eden Project;

·        an updated intranet Staff Guide for Kew-based staff and students, providing user-friendly guidance on CBD implementation procedures at Kew, key departmental contacts, standard documents, CBD background and useful links;

·        presentations at international meetings and project workshops on ABS and Kew implementation to raise awareness by professionals and students. In 2001-2005 these included the Royal Horticultural Society, Eurogard, Association for the Taxonomic Study of the Flora of Tropical Africa (AETFAT), Darwin Initiative workshop at the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), Botany 2004 (Botanical Society of America) and the International Botanical Congress; and 

·     workshop/panel discussion on access and benefit-sharing with invited speakers at the 2nd World Botanical Garden Congress. Topics covered included, inter alia, fieldwork, plant exchange, plant sales, the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) and international case studies.  

This programme is closely linked to CITES Capacity Building and is ongoing with funding coming from a range of sources.
