Role

Seed-collecting and initiating, negotiating and maintaining international collaborative projects for Millennium Seed Bank Project.

Kew seed-collector for Africa and Middle East since 1995 (23 expeditions during 1995-2000), subsequently International Co-ordinator for Africa from 1999. Negotiated first Access & Benefit-sharing agreement for MSB with Egypt in 2000 and, since 2001, likewise with Lebanon, Jordan, Burkina Faso, Mali, Northern Territory (Australia), Tasmania and Saudi Arabia. Responsibility for projects in Namibia and South Africa. Activities involve negotiating a mutually beneficial agreements between Kew and its partners, development of best practice during joint seed-collecting missions (on-the-job training of counterparts – 22 expeditions during 2001-05) and meeting an agreed species intake target on an annual basis, furthering ex situ seed banking infrastructure, and training and guidance for joint research work with relevant overseas personnel.

Contributed the species index for the proceedings of the 2001 workshop on seed conservation at the MSB.
